Affordable prefab housing is coming to Rimouski
Rimouskiis one of the 17 municipalities in the 478-unit affordable prefab housing contract carried by the Société de développement de l’Est, reported by La Presse in August 2026 — one of the largest contracts of its kind in Quebec history, according to the people behind it. On average, each participating municipality will receive 24 of these units. The municipalities provide the land, Quebec and Ottawa provide financing, and the six-unit buildings are assembled from modules built in Quebec factories. First deliveries are expected from spring 2027. Our article breaks down the structure, per-door costs and selected manufacturers.
Modular construction in Rimouski
Building in Rimouski means dealing with the Bas-Saint-Laurent climate. That is exactly what factory fabrication avoids: modules are built indoors, without weather interruptions, then transported and set on a permanent foundation. Most of the work is already done by the time your lot becomes a job site.
On top of the building price, a project in Rimouski carries off-factory costs: the land, the foundation, the connections — water and sewer, or well and septic depending on the sector — and module transport. That total is what you should compare from one builder to the next. On a permanent foundation, the home then finances like any other property.
